School Community Council (SCC) Meeting Agenda/Minutes
DATE: 9.27.17

Call to Order
Meeting called to order @ 4:30

Present: Noreen Kunitomo (Admin rep), Christine Sosa and Mari Matsuoka (parent reps), Lori Lynch (Classified rep), Topher Pike (Certificated rep), Jasmin Kiernan (Community rep), Becky Leinonen, Hala Medeiros, David Chiddo, Michele Tu’i (West Hawaii Community Health, Teledentistry)

Old Business
  • Impact of OEC - 139/150: Return of $23,449 vs $80,000
    • OEC=Official Enrollment Count
    • No loss of staff, no cut in programs
  • Open House: 50% Participation
    • Next year: SCC will gather input to find the best possible time for family participation
    • Often competes with carnival, football games, other schools open house
    • SCC input:
      • Tuesday/Wednesday activities and sports, Monday would be an ideal day
      • Friday is a short day so many families plan things after school
      • Can get students and families who pick up from A+ (around 5:30)
  • SCC Binders distributed to new members
    • Information also accessible at www.hawaiipublicschools.org

New Business
  • Strive HI Report Highlights
    • Chronic Absenteeism = 23% same as last year
    • Students who missed 15+ days in the school year are considered “chronically absent”
      • 19 students = 15% of our population
      • Variety of issues leading to chronic absenteeism: lack of transportation, family health, family vacations, family needs, Geographic exception students
      • SCC input: can we make a classroom “phone tree” for parent support?
        • Admin: must consider confidentiality guidelines, but parents could volunteer information
    • Scores based predominantly on 4th and 5th grade performance, with some 3rd grade scores counted
    • Positive Growth Measure - based upon state assessments: 73% of students made gains in ELA & 71% of students made gains in math.  Up from last year - ELA at 63% and Math at 60%.
    • Parent involvement in education is a major impact on student success.
    • Other areas of growth: Student experiences (Volcano, college visits), communication (Friday Morning Presentations, Student Council)
  • Blue Zones School
    • Registered as a BZ school (only a few points more to be certified)
    • BZ motto: Live Longer, Better
    • International Walk to School Day -  Oct 4, 2017   
      • We are NOT walking to school - NO safe routes
      • Instead we will have a field day event
      • In the bulletin for parents to come
      • Lots of different stations: healthy alternatives, exercise, games, fitness test, obstacle course etc.
      • SCC: Did we reach out to community partners?
        • Admin: Justin Udovch has reached out to some businesses
      • SCC: Donations?
        • Short time frame so let’s starting small but SCC reps are encouraged to assist
  • PCNC  Update
    • We have a new PCNC: Nicole Keanaaina
  • SCC Community Meeting - Nov 8 (Tabled until next meeting)

Public Testimony
  • Teledentistry - Michele Tu’i of West Hawaii Health Center shared info
    • Michele is a registered Dental Hygenist
    • Works with Dr. Glassman at University of the Pacific
    • First program in Hawaii
    • Targeting children from 0-5 (hoping to expand in future)
    • Have worked with communities (Ulu Wini, Tutu and Me)
    • Will bring dental office supplies with them to the location
      • Take pictures of the teeth and chart them
      • Send pictures to the dentist
      • Dentist will determine whether the child can still be seen in the community or if they need to come into the dentist
    • See children about every 3 months
    • Looking to partner with the preschool
      • MOU/MOA to be determined
    • Flyer passed out at meeting, will be distributed later at PACT
    • SCC: Hala will connect Michele with Preschool so they can get started with screenings. Presentation at PACT
    • SCC: Can younger siblings be seen with preschool students?
      • Students need to be registered at the preschool (enrolled student)
  • Gifted and Talented Program - Becky Leinonen shared info
    • Becky would like to get a GT program restarted at Honaunau
    • Funds provided for 3% to 5% of the population.
    • School can set the criteria (grade level, test scores, more)
      • Looking for 8-10 students at this school
    • Wants a program that hits the high achievers along with those who have advanced processing and thinking skills
    • More hands-on projects and connection to curriculum (aquaponics, robotics, student-created projects, and more)
    • Student driven inquiry, teacher guidance
    • DOE has a GT program guidelines
      • Very overwhelming for one person
        • Admin: Pam Camello, SSC and Louise Feldman to work with Becky. STEM teacher may take lead
        • SCC: What do you need for assistance?
      • Need to create a committee and identify philosophy
      • Review 5 criteria for entrance into program
      • Student needs to be nominated and fill criteria
      • Fundraising Opportunity: (Hala)
    • Jonathan Drogue - Manta Ray company has donated 30 to 40 tickets for manta ray diving
    • How do we distribute/sell?
    • Looking to start at $30, price could go up depending on desire
    • Could be silent auction, other fundraising method.

  • CPR training - West Hawaii Health Center survey result
    • Jasmin could get a CPR trainer to train families for small cost - $10
    • Becky: could assist students interested in getting  their babysitting license
      • CPR/First aid certification is a requirement
      • Could be on a Wednesday for older kids (short day for KMS)
