School Community Council (SCC) Meeting Agenda/Minutes

Call to Order
Present: Noreen Kunitomo (Admin), Christopher Pike (Certificated), Lori Lynch (Classified), Mari Matsuoka (Parent), Hala Medeiros (Community)

Review Agenda
May 2018 Minutes Approved        

Old Business
  • Distribute Friday Morning Presentation Schedule - share updates
    • Student Leadership Team will be the emcees for presentations (role models/exemplars for presenting)
    • SLT interviews are being conducted this week
  • Counselor met with upper elementary students to discuss the issue of bullying
  • Roots of Empathy program (Changing the World Child by Child)
    • Evidence based program developed in 1996 by Mary Gordon
    • Program supports developing empathy for young students - “ the value of and how to best nurture empathy and social literacy in all children and reduce aggression and bullying
    • Starting in 2nd Grade with Mrs Berry
    • Students watch how babies/young toddlers interact and learn empathy through child development

New Business
  • Review SCC Roles & Responsibilities
    • Participate in collaborative opportunities, communicate school issues and advocate for the school
    • Focus this year: Achievement and Literacy and how to connect literacy to the home
  • Official Enrollment Count (OEC): Enrolled as of 8.20.18 133. 140 was the projected count, We were 7 short of our goal. Required to return $26,127
  • Impact - loss of a half time teacher
  • Tupperware Fundraiser
    • Open to anyone, even people on the mainland! Please share with family, friends, aquaintances
    • Can we get the tupperware fundraising packet in Spanish?


  • Supports for ELL parents
    • Purchased Rosetta Stone licenses, offering EL parents to learn English
    • Rosetta Stone will also be available to teachers to learn spanish (2 licenses)
  • Growth Mindset: All to learn that “mistakes help us grow” and to understand “the power of yet”.
  • Importance of Literacy & Parent Engagement - We need to encourage parents to get engaged in their child’s education.  Looking for suggestions
  • Traffic Congestion
    • Traffic is backed up to the highway
    • Drivers are speeding up the hill
    • Part of challenge is the limited parking
    • In the Bulletin the school listed things to consider…
      • Take advantage of the FREE bus transportation
      • Join afterschool programs
      • Consider arriving later - 2:20 - 2:30

Public Testimony
Less P.E.? Students saying we have less P.E. than the past
  • Teachers are doing more energetic/lively activities in the classroom
Issues with heat: Difficult for students to function
  • School purchased fans for each classroom and is pilot testing the use of portable AC units in classrooms with a larger student count.
