School Community Council (SCC) Meeting Agenda/Minutes

Call to Order
Present:  Noreen Kunitomo (Admin), Christopher Pike (Certificated), Lori Lynch (Classified), Hala Medeiros (Parent/Community), Christine Sosa (Parent), Mari Matsuoka

Old Business
  • Parent / Community Partnerships:  WHCHC coordinated CPR & First Aid Training as requested by parents.  Owen Yamaguchi, WHCHC along with volunteer firefighters and paramedics provided the training for 22 interested participants.
    • Waiting on certificates for participants

New Business
  •  May 2018 Reflection/Feedback
    • Teacher: double sided tape for pasting scripts into the book, get rid of the top part of the scripts so students cannot make “fake scripts”
    • $500 in pre-sale scripts
    • Bag idea for rummage sale was great!
    • Around $14,000 generated total, still waiting on some auction items
      • Can we post auction items on school website? Yes, but time crunch to end of the year. If not, donated items could be used for incentive for open house
    • Tents over the bleachers was great, will we get a covering for students on court?
      • Cost is an issue, as is visibility for parents. That is why umbrellas were provided.
    • Attire change was welcome
    • Can we stretch the shade cloth to help with space?
    • Preschool space was opened up on the side, but parents did not put tents up there
  •  Lions Club Voter Registration: Flyer sent home in Tuesday    Envelope
    • Less than 20% of the population in South Kona is registered to vote
  •  Principal Survey - Principals excused from meeting.  SCC members completed survey of principal
  •  Friday Morning Presentations
    • Can the students be all together again? Parents missed having all the kids together
    • Important for kids to see the older students present with role models
    • Continue to do the model of class presentation every other week, with PBIS presentations in between? (Anti-bullying, Role playing)

Old Business
  • WHCHC Mobile Health Clinic:
    • The clinic met and provided 4 families with services
    • Zumba activity for parents - lots of excitement and exercise
    • Jasmine to schedule dates for May and summer.  
    • Next parent activity - CPR & First Aid.
        • Principal requested a flyer on Vaping (to be sent home with the bulletin)

New Business
  • Honaunau Career Day - scheduled for April 12, 2019  Baton was passed to Honaunau from Hookena. Initial intent for Career Day - to expose students to a variety of careers.  Focus was to have parents and community as role models however we will expand the pool of candidates to areas of student interest.  WHCHC will support by providing representatives..       
  • Academic 3 year Plan: Continue with same schoolwide agreements and to provide opportunities to help students academically as well as to foster career exploration.  Continue to increase focus on science through projects like aquaponics, Social Skills curriculum to support students and to encourage parent/community partnerships.
  • Discussion on the importance of developing student empathy and making good choices. As a result, the following goals will be introduced next school year...Growing Pono Schools program, GLO student celebrations, academic parent/child activities, increase the love of reading, and multicultural awareness events highlighting ethnic groups within the community.
