School Community Council (SCC) Meeting Agenda/Minutes DATE: 11.28.18 Call to Order Meeting Called to order @ 4:40 Present: Noreen Kunitomo (Admin), Christopher Pike (Certificated), Lori Lynch (Classified), Mari Matsuoka (Parent), Jasmin Kiernan (Community), Kylie Matsuoka & Mahinalani Medeiros (Students) Review Agenda Agenda provided and approved Old Business ● Tupperware fundraiser complete ○ Still waiting for results, will be a small amount of funds raised New Business ● Welcome new staff: Apple Dowdle PreK PPT, Marcia Draeger and Gabriella Magana, Translators ● Nicole - Lei Keanaaina, returns as PCNC ● Parent Conferences ○ Scheduling from office was great for teachers. Teachers were flexible and scheduled morning conferences however due to a few challenges they need need to plan more efficiently on coordination efforts. ○ Translators were fantastic! ○ Suggestion: could we do morning conferences from 7:00-8:30 with the students in an activity block? ● Book Fair a success ○ Sales = $2514.36 a small decrease from last year ($3089.06) ○ A Must Read! We're All Wonders by RJ Palacio ○ A story of hope, empathy, difference and kindness. Learn what it is like to live in Auggie's world. Let's make a difference! "Look with kindness and you will always find wonder" ○ Many students buying Graphic Novels, sign of increased engagement ○ Book Clubs in 3-5 ■ Increased engagement, student choice, sparks the love of reading, students can read at their own pace and not rushed ○ Parents reading to classes ■ Dr.Seuss week (Week of March 2) ■ Can we get more parents to come in and read to the kids? ● Some that speak spanish can come in and read a dual language book ● A couple families per grade level ● Read once a month? ● Can the high schoolers come back and read to the kids as well?it can be their volunteer hours for the scholarship ● Fire Fighter’s Safety Guide ○ 5 students were able to successfully answer questions from the safety guide activity booklet. ○ Importance of reviewing the activities and information with child and to practice safety protocols regularly ○ Students must be able to communicate with service providers when help is needed ○ Knowing their contact information - address, phone# is important! ● Honaunau Foundation Scholarship ○ $1000 Scholarship ○ 60 hours of service - 30 of 60 hrs at/for Honaunau Elem ○ Need assistance getting the word out ○ Student Leaders to attend Konawaena Scholarship Night - Dec 5 at 5:30pm ■ Kylie, Sophia, and Mahina ■ Mr. Pike offered tol help with speech/coaching ● Family Engagement Workshops - Program Implementation Guide ○ HMH - Houghton, Mifflin, Harcourt Family Engagement ○ Workshops focus on activities to increase parent engagement and involvement with schools ○ Priority to start with PreK and Kinders - importance of attendance and Literacy Public Testimony None Upcoming Events ● Imiloa Field Trip Gr 2-3: 11/29 ● GEMS Grade 5 12/4 ● Konawaena Scholarship Night 12/5 ● Path Bike Rodeo Gr 3-5: 12/7 ● Off Campus Evacuation Drill: 12/12 ● Holiday Crafts Family Night: 12/14 ● Bike Give-Away 12/21 Next Meeting December 19, 2018 @ 4:30 pm Adjournment Adjourned at 5:30pm

School Community Council (SCC) Meeting Agenda/Minutes DATE: 10.24.18 Call to Order Present: Noreen Kunitomo (Admin), Christopher Pike (Certificated), Lori Lynch (Classified), Jazmin Kiernan (Community), Hala Medeiros (Parent) Mahinalani Malama Medeiros (Student Leadership Team) Review Agenda September 2018 Minutes approved Old Business ● Tupperware fundraiser ends October 30. New Business ● Unity Day ○ Student Leadership team held a sign waving event to support unity, anti-bullying efforts, and inclusiveness ○ Students developed a unity tree, where students wrote a message of how they are going to be part of a united school environment ○ Cars still speeding past our school, will do future sign waving to support slowing down by our school ■ Sign waving quarterly and if possible once a month ● Social Emotional Learning (SEL) ○ Watched the Nadine Burke Harris TED Talk on Trauma Informed Care ○ Group discussed the video, its connections to our lives, and how it impacts our school ○ Bringing behavioral health services to Honaunau School/WHCHC school clinic is in the works ● Consolidation Rumors ○ Concern: community is beginning to hear rumors about combining/consolidating Honaunau and Hookena due to the small sizes of both schools ○ Right now, consolidation is a conversation as an option ○ Big island has some of the oldest schools in the state. Honaunau is the 9th oldest school in the state. ○ The reality is that the state is Big Island schools are not funded equitably as Oahu schools. ○ We are looking for community support as this process starts to become more visible and prevalent ● CNA feedback needed at next meeting!
