Notes from 11/29/17 Approved

Old Business
  • Honaunau Foundation Scholarship: On 12/13/17 Student Leaders - Kaija Leinonen and Leilani Nye did a presentation for Juniors and Seniors at Konawaena High School who attended Honaunau Elementary and Middle School.
    • 7 juniors attended (we are looking for seniors - C/O 2018 for this year’s scholarship!)
    • Getting a head start on community service hours!

New Business
  • Health & Wellness Guideline posted on office wall
    • Will be up on website shortly
    • Our goal at school is to support healthy practices and to participate in Blue Zones activities.  We hope to encourage parent involvement and transfer the practice to the home.
    • The Wellness Committee introduced a new term: Moai - a Japanese term meaning to meet for a common purpose.  Students were informed about moai walks, asked to walk with 3-5 friends and to learn something new about each. Starting next January the goal is to walk as a school (every other week on Friday)
  • Holiday Craft Family Night - 6 craft stations, 3 games,
    • Purpose: to encourage parent and child(ren) working together
    • The event was a success!
    • Over 100 individuals - 35 families and 47 students signed in
    • Student feedback: Mr. Pike’s station was everyone’s favorite, “he is so awesome”
    • Was a little cramped due to so many in attendance.
    • Suggestion: to also utilize the space outside of the cafe
  • Community Partners: Blue Zones Hawaii and West Hawaii Health Center provided healthy alternative snacks.
  • New washer/dryer for campus
    • Focus:  to reduce absences and to support the Whole Child
    • Donated by local business
    • New outlet will be installed by Sakamoto Electric during the winter break
    • Area outside of the cafe will be enclosed with the assistance of families and community support
  • Academic Financial Plan (Personnel section)
    • Funds are allocated by student enrollment count.  Concern: the continued decrease in enrollment will impact position allocations.
    • Projected funds available for present staff.
    • Casual support staff funded by additional federal funding - Title I, Title III, MEP, grants etc
    • School requested additional funds and was granted $61,000.  No teaching positions will be reduced; however, clerical staff is reduced to 1.5 for SY2018-19.
  • Question:  Will donations help?  Yes, it will help to support student activities.  Donations should be used for students and not for position allocations.
  • Comments: Parents really appreciate the staff for the opportunities provided to their children.  Activities mentioned...basketball, track and field, assemblies, field trips - Dolphin Quest.
