Smarter Balanced Assessments Administration Surveys

Any school level staff member who assisted with the administration of the Spring 2015 Smarter Balanced English Language Arts/Literacy and/or Mathematics Assessments is encouraged to complete an anonymous online survey about the administration of the assessments. The Smarter Balanced Assessments Administration Survey can be accessed by following the link at http://alohahsap.org/SMARTERBALANCED/test-administrators/ or by clicking here.

The Parent/Student Smarter Balanced Assessments Administration Survey is for students in grades 3-8 and 11, who took the Smarter Balanced English Language Arts and Mathematics Assessments during Spring 2015, and their parents to complete. Students and parents are encouraged to complete this anonymous online survey about the Smarter Balanced Assessments by following the link at http://alohahsap.org/SMARTERBALANCED/students/ or by clicking here. This link may be forwarded to students who were administered the assessments and their parents.

This valuable feedback will be reviewed by the Department’s Assessment Section staff and used to make appropriate adjustments to the test administration procedures for the Spring 2016 administration of the Smarter Balanced Assessments.

Professional Development Opportunities for Building Educators' Smarter Balanced Assessment Literacy including Hand Scoring of the Interim Assessments (repeat)

The Assessment Section, in partnership with WestEd and the Stanford Center for Assessment, Literacy, and Equity (SCALE), will provide a series of two-day face-to-face professional development opportunities for Building Educator Assessment Literacy across the state during July 2015 (see DOE Memo dated May 8, 2015). The training will provide educators with a deeper understanding of Smarter Balanced performance tasks, how they assess the Hawaii Common Core, and the implications for classroom instruction. The professional development is a two-day event and participants must be available to attend both days. The workshops have been scheduled for the following dates:      DateTime
                       Location
    July 7 - 8, 2015
    8:00–4:00
    Oahu (Central and Leeward): TBA
    July 9 - 10, 2015
    8:00–4:00
Maui including Lanai and Molokai: TBA
    July 13 - 14, 2015
    8:00–4:00
Hawaii (both East and West Hawaii): TBA
    July 15 - 16, 2015
    8:00–4:00
    Oahu (Honolulu and Windward): TBA
    July 20 - 21, 2015
    8:00–4:00
    Kauai: TBA

The Assessment Section will support the participation of one English Language Arts/literacy and one mathematics instructional leader at each school to participate in this professional development opportunity. In addition, each Complex Area Superintendent is also invited to send up to two complex area representatives whose responsibilities include supporting schools with the implementation and use of the Smarter Balanced Interim Assessments.

Assessment Section support will include a stipend of $164 per day for 10-month DOE employees as well as airfare, lodging, and per diem for neighbor island participants when appropriate. Participants from Molokai and Lanai should attend the professional development on Maui.

The online registration form for each training may be accessed at the following link:  https://app.smartsheet.com/b/form?EQBCT=0fabbb2cc2df48cc8eacdc03bbf60268

Educators may register online. The registration period will end on Wednesday, June 3, 2015. Completing the online request form does not guarantee registration for a training date.  The Assessment Section will review the list of requests on a rolling basis to ensure the key staff members at each school and complex area are given first opportunity to register. Once confirmed, each registrant will receive a confirmation email.   Additional DOE participants will be accepted on a space available basis.
