STEM in the Garden is a new program for the 2015/16 school year offered to grades 3 & 4 at Honaunau School. This program works to give students an extra hour each week to focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.
By applying classroom concepts to real life problems, our students get a chance to explore how to interact and apply STEM skills in their world. Measurement, Chemistry, Biology, Fractions, and much more are introduced and investigated in this outdoor space. Using long term projects our students get a sense of accountability for their efforts and the time to witness progress as their work evolves. New topics arise as projects go on, such as chemistry to understand the elements needed in a compost pile, or the ability to make an accurate grid and map. We also help students begin to apply the scientific method, enabling them to get a taste of a middle school or high school science experiment. |
