School Community Council (SCC) Meeting
August 17, 2016

Members present: Noreen Kunitomo (Principal/Admin), Christopher Pike (Certificated), Trish Mejia, Hala Medeiros (Parent Reps), Lilette Beckett (Classified).

  1. Call meeting to order at 4:15

  1. Welcome new members
    1. Mr. Pike - new Certificated rep
    2. Thelma “Hala” Medeiros - new Parent Alt Rep

  1. Approved May Minutes

  1. New Business
    1. Discussion on involve students in SCC
      1. Two students have been asked to participate in SCC, Lotus Buss (primary) and Malina Chiddo (alternate). Currently waiting on approval from parents.
    2. SCC Self Assessment
      1. Chair was not present, will be reviewed at next SCC meeting
    3. School mission and vision
      1. Updated for 2016-2017 school year
      2. Includes the HA: BREATH statements from Na Hopena A’o - Policy E3
        1. Belonging
        2. Responsibility
        3. Excellence
        4. Aloha
        5. Total Well-being
        6. Hawaii
      3. HA will be rolled out to staff, students, and families throughout the year as directed by HIDOE.
      4. Will be available online for parents to access on school website
    4. Meeting Schedule for SY 2016-2017
      1. Monthly meetings, held 3rd Wednesdays at 4:15
      2. Council Roster distributed
      3. Principal to submit to District Office
    5. Roles and Responsibilities for SCC
      1. Review presented by Principal Kunitomo
      2. SCC are caretakers of school’s vision/mission and ensure that it is supported and carried out
      3. SCC reviews Strategic Plan and Academic and Financial Plan (AFP)
      4. SCC acts in an advisory capacity to the principal, who has the final say in all administrative areas
      5. SCC must be collaborative with the entire school community so that all stakeholders know school issues, events
      6. SCC members are trustees of the school’s vision and mission, and plays a vital role in ensuring success for all students
    6. Honaunau Foundation Scholarship
      1. $1000, generated through fundraising, are appropriated for a scholarship fund
      2. Discussion: Should the scholarship be 2) $500 scholarships (boy and girl)? Or 1) $1000 scholarship?
        1. 2 scholarships should generate excitement amongst graduating class, will hopefully lead to more applications.
        2. Decision: 2) $500 scholarships, one for a boy and one for a girl
      3. Eligibility
        1. Post Secondary Acceptance Letter and
        2. Registration-Class Schedule from college
      4. Criteria
        1. Must be a Honaunau Alumni (attended for at least 1 full year)
          1. Parent suggestion: Bonus awarded to a candidate for 6 years of attendance
            1. Discussed by SCC, although it is nice for students to have been here for longer than one year students’ don’t have control of that.
            2. Scholarship should be merit based
        2. Academic Merit- GPA 2.0 or higher
        3. Complete 30 hours of service at/for Honaunau School
          1. 3 events with 1 occurring during the senior year
          2. Ex: May Day, Olympics, Holiday Craft night, Career Day, Learning Opportunities, Special Projects
          3. Do-able in one year, but can start as soon as 6th grade g
          4. Volunteer hours are logged by office, but students should track their own hours
        4. Completion of a Personal Transition Plan by January of senior year
          1. Submit confirmation form signed by counselor/PTP teacher/coordinator and submit a PTP portfolio to SCC for review.
          2. Encourages students to complete PTP in December/January, which will help students on the path to graduation (PTP is graduation requirement)
        5. Council agreed that current criteria are appropriate, Principal Kunitomo will speak to counselors at Konawaena High to get information out to students
      5. Principal’s report
        1. Enrollment Count Date 8/12/16
          1. Projected Enrollment Count 155 students
          2. Actual Enrollment Count 150 students
          3. Requires return of $34,000 to state
        2. Free/Reduced Lunch count date 9/13/16
          1. Families should submit applications ASAP
          2. Count as of 9/13/16 will be percentage of funds for next year
        3. Personnel and Placements
          1. Elena Borisoff will return to Honaunau School on 9/12 as a translator
          2. Lisa Berry will be returning on 9/6 (PC Day) as long term substitute

  1. Public Testimony
    1. Head Lice - “Uku” Policy
      1. Uku policy is coming from the superintendent and CAS not the school.
        1. State’s position is based upon research. Ukus are considered a nuisance, not a disease. Ukus do not spread disease and thus are not a health threat to other students.
      2. Suggestions from parents are always welcome
