Today I worked with grades 1, 2, and 5 in computer class. We were having some trouble accessing our internet based activities so my students worked on some list making.
Second grade also worked on our alphabetical food list. They also worked on how to find items that aren't on the desktop by using the finder menu. For the second part of class we worked on KidBiz, reading articles and answering questions.
Fifth grade also worked on lists. The first few lists were done with our hands crossed on the keyboard. This made typing seem easy when we switched back to using our home keys with correct hands. We started on with an alphabetical food list and finished with a list of names. We ended class with a few minutes of Weave Silk followed by 10FastFingers. So far, 28 WPM is our top speed in 5th grade. Let's see if they can beat it!
Have a groovy weekend!
Aloha! Today is the last day of class before spring break. I was happy to have grades 3,4, & 5 again today to work on their typing in preparation for the SBAC Exam.
I had a small group for 5th grade and we were able to work on our Dino Challenge. We type up names of dinosaurs off of a sheet of paper for two minutes. The student with the most names gets an extra check.
With our students gearing up for the SBAC test, grades 3, 4, and 5 worked on typing and proofreading today. There is a great site from Harcourt Schools with proofreading practice. Proofreading Makes Perfect allows students to practice spelling and grammar in different parts of the sentence. Their exercises help students scan sentences for common mistakes and gives tips on how to fix them.
Grades 3 & 4 worked on these exercises from Harcourt. First the students open up a web browser like Firefox or Safari. Then they go to the Google search engine and enter "Harcourt School" + "proofreading" + their grade. The first link from Google (not Yahoo!) will usually be the correct one.
We had some internet problems so 5th grade worked on a different activity. We did another "Story Starter". Students worked in groups of three to type stories from the following starter "I was a looking a shark right in the eye when he said...". We got a lot of good stories from class including ones about shark slayers, the doom cave at the bottom of the ocean, and a dastardly whale shark.
Happy Aloha Friday!
